Leadership Through Governance:

Enhancing the role of nonprofit boards in

organizational and community leadership.

A series of one-hour seminars will be held, one each month for six months, to introduce new concepts in leadership through organizational governance.  These seminars will be facilitated by Jim Klusman, Ph.D., an organization development coach from Lafayette, Indiana, a member of the Fulton County Comeback team.

Eligibility:  Current board members and staff members of nonprofit organizations.  At least two board members (one as an alternate) and one staff member from each participating organization must agree to attend as explained below.

Monthly Timetable (dates are tentative):

1.      Governance (Feb 18)

2.      Fiduciary responsibility (Mar 18).

3.      Governance as leadership (Apr 15).

4.      Policy development (May 20).

5.      Strategic planning (Jun 17).

6.      Summary (Jul 15).

Goals of the Series:

1.      Enhance the ability of nonprofit boards to exercise a leadership role for community betterment.

2.      Increase community leadership in Fulton County Comeback.

3.      Provide participants with tools for training others in “Leadership Through Governance.”

Organizations selected for participation will provide the names of primary and alternate board members, and primary and alternate (when possible) staff members, who will attend.  Seminars will be held at Fulton Economic Development Corporation / Rochester and Lake Manitou Chamber of Commerce offices, 822 Main Street in Rochester for board members at 12:00 noon and for staff members at 4:00 pm.  Attendance by at least one of each organization’s representatives at each session is very important.  Makeup sessions will not be provided.  While participants or their alternates are urged to attend the seminar pertaining to their role in the organization, in extreme cases they may attend the alternate seminar provided that day.  Lunch will be provided for the noon meeting.

Organizations will be encouraged to experiment with the governance tools provided and report back on preliminary results at subsequent seminars.

Due to the importance of this capacity building initiative the Fulton County Community Foundation will provide a $500 grant to each organization that has a representative at each seminar. This means perfect attendance at the volunteer sessions and the staff sessions if the organization has staff.
